If you have been considering growing your charitable project by starting a nonprofit it is important to think about what type of board you will need.
Your board is the governing body who will help you make critical decisions based on their expertise following your predetermined guidelines.  This means you need to understand their personalities, capabilities, and networking skills are a fit for your organization.
So what does it take to create an engaging board who believes in your mission and is willing to fight for your cause? First make a list of the characteristics and field of expertise your organization requires.  For example, if you are starting a horticulture group, your board should consist of those interested in community beautification, stewardship of the land, and educated in the fields of horticulture and floriculture. This board, including yourself should consist of an odd number of participants so as not to deadlock the votes and each individual should compliment the others with their own unique skills and talents. If you are planning several events, an event planner will be a great addition to the board as they can delegate and regulate tasks related to those projects without difficulty.  If you are planning on executing building projects, a developer or licensed contractor may also be a consideration for a qualified board member.
Once you have informed potential board members of your organization's primary objectives, and they seemingly want to participate in your philanthropic affairs, it is now time to present them with a board member agreement that describes what you are asking them to do on behalf of the organization.  These agreements, by the way, as all contracts, are legally binding, so seek expertise that is knowledgeable about how to construct these documents specifically for your organization. As board membership interest increases, be sure to connect potential members with existing members to ensure there are no conflict of interests preventing the productivity of the organization.

Were Here Nonprofitable Charitable Foundation will discuss many facets of board development, sustainability practices, and leadership in this ongoing blog series.  Keep an eye out for our newsletter, ongoing activities schedule, and network updates as we look forward to always providing you with helpful information that helps your charitable mission to effectively reach the ever-growing demands of our communities.
